At just 27, I never imagined I’d be running a thriving language business, teaching hundreds of students weekly and growing a career I love.
I’m Megan Haycock, franchisee of Language for Fun in Sandbach, teaching Spanish and Italian to adults.
From Language Enthusiast to Business Owner
My passion for languages started at a very young age, and eventually led me to study Spanish and Criminology, spending a year in Spain teaching English before returning to the UK to finish my degree. It was then that I started teaching Spanish and French for a local Language for Fun franchisee, working with over 300 students a week.
At the time I knew very little about franchising, but working closely with my mentor, who had 20 years of experience gave me valuable insight into running a business. Her support and guidance gave me the confidence to take the leap, and in January 2023, I launched my own Language for Fun franchise. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Building a Thriving Community and Supporting Local Businesses
In just a year, my franchise flourished. I decided to expand by taking on tutors, branching out to two locations and adding Italian classes. By autumn 2024, we were running 25 weekly classes, growing 30% in student numbers.
I love running my franchise and I feel so proud of the wonderful community I have built locally and the friendships that have blossomed as a part of it. My students ages range from their late 20’s to early 80’s and many of them have built friendships beyond the classroom. For some, these sessions provide an important social space where they feel connected and inspire, and which many students have told me has been a lifeline.
Our classes take place in independent cafés, pubs, and community venues, helping to bring in new customers and support local businesses. We also organize social events, from conversation meet-ups to cultural nights, reinforcing the connection between language learning and real-life experiences.
Personal and Professional Growth
My involvement with Language for Fun extended beyond teaching—I took on roles in Head Office, led training sessions, and supported other franchisees with marketing and tutor recruitment. Expanding my business knowledge and implementing marketing strategies allowed me to grow my franchise while developing new skills.
One of my biggest personal achievements has been gaining financial independence and buying my first home at 26—something I never imagined would happen so early in my career. Running my own business has given me the flexibility to shape my schedule, travel, and pursue opportunities beyond traditional employment.
Creating Meaningful Experiences
One of the most exciting parts of my journey has been organizing trips to Spain with my students, to give them the opportunity to practice their Spanish in real life situations! Our first Alicante trip in 2024 was such a blast that we already have another booked!
Inspiring Young Entrepreneurs
As the youngest Language for Fun franchisee, I’m passionate about encouraging more young people—especially women—to explore franchising. My fresh approach to marketing, particularly through social media, has helped attract a diverse audience, from retirees to young professionals.
To top it all off, I’ve recently been honoured with a nomination for an Encouraging Women into Franchising (EWIF) award, and I look forward to continuing to grow my business while inspiring others to take the leap into entrepreneurship.
